PTI decides to move PHC for election date in KP

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday decided to move the Peshawar High Court (PHC) for an election date in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), ARY News reported. As per details, the petition will be filed by PTI leaders Asad Umar and former chief minister of KP Pervaiz Khattak in Peshawar High Court (PHC). Former Information minister KP Shaukat Yousafzai said that the governor needs to give the election date when signing the assembly dissolution summary. For two weeks the governor has not announced the election date which is a violation of the constitution. The petition will be filed to urge the court to order ECP for election in the country. KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Babar Ghauri on Tuesday arrived in Karachi via foreign airline flight EK-606, ARY News reported. Accompanied by his wife, the former senator landed in Karachi from Dubai. Ghauri returned to Pakistan after securing protective bail in two cases from Sindh High Court (SHC). The SHC Friday granted protective bail to Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Babar Ghauri in two terrorism and corruption cases. The court granted protective bail to Ghauri in two cases till February 6 against surety bonds worth Rs200,000. Tanda Dam tragedy: Rescue teams fish out 10 more bodies of children

PESHAWAR: The rescue workers have recovered 10 more bodies of seminary students, who drowned in the Tanda Dam due to a boat capsized on Sunday, bringing the overall number to 30, ARY News reported.  According to Kohat District Police, 46 children, mostly aged between 8 to 10 years, were riding on the boat during a field trip when it overturned in the middle of the dam apparently due to overload. The rescue operation was suspended on Sunday evening due to cold and darkness, and resumed on Tuesday. Some 10 more bodies were recovered by the rescue teams. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister Khushdil Khan, who supervised the rescue operation said the operation would continue till the recovery of all dead bodies. UN chief condemns Peshawar blast

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned Monday’s suicide bombing at a mosque in Peshawar in which over 80 people were martyred and many more wounded, saying it was “particularly abhorrent” that the attack occurred at a place of worship. The death toll in the suicide bombing in the Police Lines mosque in Peshawar has climbed to 83 after 13 more dead bodies were retrieved from the wreckage by the rescue teams. “Freedom of religion or belief, including the ability to worship in peace and security, is a universal human right,” his Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement he read out at the regular noon briefing at UN Headquarters in New York. “The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a prompt recovery to those injured,” the statement said. Election date: LHC seeks reply from govt, governor

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday sought a response from the federal government, Punjab governor and others on a PTI petition seeking immediate announcement of the election date for the provincial assembly. The  Punjab Assembly was dissolved  constitutionally after Punjab Governor Baligh ur Rehman excused himself from signing the summary, saying he could not become a part of the process. According to details, Justice Jawad Hassan heard PTI leader Asad Umar’s petition in which Governor Punjab Baligh Ur Rehman has been made respondent in the plea via his secretary. At the outset of the hearing, the court showed resentment over the non-preparation of the government’s lawyer in the case and asked how come he was unaware of the hearing of the case. RAWALPINDI: The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) on Monday sealed seven units of Lal Haveli, the residence of Awami Muslim League (AML) chief and former interior minister Sheikh Rashid, ARY News reported. According to initial reports, the ETPB staff along with Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and police personnel reached the residence of Sheikh Rashid to seal it in line with the court’s orders. ETPB Deputy Administrator Asif Khan led the operation. Khan said Sheikh Rashid and his brother Sheikh Siddique have ‘illegally’ occupied seven acres land of Lal Haveli. US judge blocks sale of machine gun converters

NEW YORK: The US Department of Justice said it has obtained a court order blocking two firearms companies from imperiling public safety by illegally selling devices to convert AR-15 style rifles into machine guns. US District Judge Nina Morrison in Brooklyn on Wednesday issued a temporary restraining order against Rare Breed Triggers LLC and Rare Breed Firearms LLC, and their owners Lawrence DeMonico and Kevin Maxwell. The Justice Department in a civil complaint said Rare Breed has sold thousands of devices known as FRT-15s that are designed and intended to convert AR-15 style semiautomatic firearms into machine guns. The department said this meant the devices qualified as machine guns under federal law, and said the devices did not qualify for limited exceptions permitting their sale. Power breakdown: NTDC finalises initial report

The National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) has finalised an initial inquiry report, revealing the reasons behind the power breakdown in several parts of Pakistan on Monday, January 23, ARY News reported. In a report, NTDC has determined the reasons behind the blackout, stating that the breakdown was caused due to fluctuation in frequency on January 23. The report said due to the tripping of 500KV lines, 11,356 MW of electricity disappeared from the NTDC system due to frequency fluctuation. The frequency of the system was 50megahertz before the breakdown which suddenly shoot up to 57megahertz.
