ISLAMABAD: The number of polio cases in Pakistan reached 22 this year after the latest case was reported from Pishin, a district of Balochistan, ARY News reported citing sources. The National Institute of Health (NIH) confirmed that another polio case is reported in Pakistan, bringing the total number of cases this year to 22. The National Polio Testing Laboratory has also verified after determining that the new case is caused by the wild poliovirus type 1, medical experts say. The affected patient is a child of two and a half years old and genetic testing of the polio virus is currently underway to determine its origin and relation to other cases. Power generation hits 7-Year low

Pakistan’s power generation has hit a seven-year low, experiencing a 17.4% year-over-year decline, highlighting the challenges faced by the energy sector, as the country grapples with a subdued economy and consequently, a slump in energy demand. In August 2024, power generation in Pakistan declined by 17.4% compared to August 2023, reaching 13,179 gigawatt-hours (GWh) or 17,714 megawatts (MW), according to AHL Research report. This is a significant drop compared to 15,959 GWh (21,450 MW) during the same period last year. On a month-over-month (MoM) basis, power generation witnessed a dip of 11.4%. For the first two months of the fiscal year 2025 (2MFY25), power generation fell by 8.9% year-over-year (YoY) to 28,059 GWh (18,857 MW) compared to 30,798 GWh (20,697 MW) in the same period last year. ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Aid on Law Affairs Barrister Aqeel Malik said that the government will present the constitutional amendments in parliament on Sunday, ARY News reported. Speaking at ARY News programme ‘ Sawal Ye Hai’ , Barrister Aqeel Malik claimed that the federal government has a two-thirds majority required to get the constitutional amendments passed. “We will present the constitutional amendment (in parliament) on Sunday the matter will not be delayed until Monday,” he added He asserted that the government is not in a hurry to make constitutional amendments, adding that the matter was already being discussed. NEPRA fines KE over electrocution cases

ISLAMABAD:  The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) imposed a Rs 10 million fine on K-Electric (KE) over the electrocution incidents in Karachi from 2022 to 2023 that resulted in the deaths of 33 citizens. As per the details, the NEPRA rejected K-Electric’s response to the show-cause notice and imposed the fine. The regulatory body directed K-Electric to deposit the fine amount in a designated bank within 15 days. The NEPRA has directed K-Electric to pay Rs3.5 million in compensation to the heirs of each affected family. Additionally, the authority has directed K-Electric to provide a job to one of the heirs of Muhammad Aslam, one of the victims. KARACHI: A tragic incident was reported from Karachi’s old Golimar area near Eidgah Ground when an 8-year-old child was allegedly thrown into the sewerage drain by a woman believed to be mentally ill, ARY News reported on Tuesday. The local police claimed that the woman – believed to be mentally ill – picked up the child, who was playing nearby, and threw him into the sewerage drain and fleeing the scene. ANKARA: Turkish Foreign Minister will attend the Arab League ministerial meeting in Cairo on Tuesday for the first time in thirteen years, local media reported. A Turkish news agency reported that diplomatic sources informed it that Ankara received an invitation to join the 162nd session of the Arab Foreign Ministers conference, which would take place in the Arab bloc centered in Cairo.
