SIM cards of nearly 2m non-filers to be blocked

ISLAMABAD: Implementing the orders of International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to block the SIM cards of nearly 2 million individuals involved in tax evasion, ARY News reported on Saturday. Sources told ARY News that FBR chairman has greenlighted the blocking of SIM cards of tax evaders dispatched instructions to relevant officials. The FBR has identified 1.8 million tax evaders. Sources claimed that the FBR also has the authority to disconnect electricity connections, besides blocking SIM cards of non-filers. Meanwhile, special powers have been given to 145 district tax officers across the country in this regard. Action will be taken under Section 114-B against non-filers and tax evaders. Sources added that the FBR had previously sent notices to such individuals, but returns were still not filed. Foreign woman harassed by online taxi driver in Karachi

KARACHI: A first information report (FIR) has been registered against an online taxi driver for allegedly harassing a foreign woman, a citizen of the United States (US), in Karachi, ARY News reported on Saturday. The FIR was registered at Gadap police station on complaint of the foreign woman on April 10. According to the FIR – a copy of which is available with ARY News, the victim booked an online taxi from Karachi’s Superhighway. Meanwhile, the victim alleged that the driver started harassing her at gunpoint. “Following his [the online taxi driver] actions, I started shouting but to no avail. He then manhandled me and continued harassing,” she said. However, the foreign woman claimed that the FIR was registered as per her complaint. “The police reported the case in Urdu language, which I can’t understand,” she said. Mehmood Achakzai named President of opposition alliance

QUETTA: The six opposition parties named Mahmood Khan Achakzai as president of their newly formed alliance “Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aaeen” (Constitution Protection Movement) against the government, ARY News reported. ADB predicts 1.9pc growth for Pakistan’s economy this fiscal year

KARACHI: Predicting Pakistan’s growth rate to be 1.9 percent this fiscal year, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in its report has anticipated a reduction in the wave of inflation in the next financial year, ARY News reported on Friday. The Asian Development Bank’s annual Outlook Report for 2024 revealed that the inflation in Pakistan has surged to its highest level in the past five decades last year, meanwhile, the inflation has continues to rise this year due to the surge in energy prices as part of the IMF program. In its annual report, the Asian Development Bank stated that political instability in Pakistan is a major challenge for economic recovery and reforms. Pakistan seeking potential follow-up loan programme: IMF chief

Pakistan is in discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on a potential follow-up programme to its nine-month, $3 billion stand-by arrangement, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva said on Thursday, adding that it had important issues to solve.
